07 - Dori (02)

"Indeed", answered Dori, "I'm not surprised that the burglar doesn't seem to be convinced of following us. He lives in such a quite, idyllic place. But what happened inside?", he asked, "I heard a noise and then Gandalf came out yelling at me with no reason! I better go inside and see what's going on. Do you want to go with me so that we all can figure out what expects us next?". Bombur nodded and they both crossed Bilbo's doorway.
They found the other dwarves gathered around the table. They were staring at a blank piece of paper that laid on the wooden surface and they all seemed confused and pensive at the same time.
"What's going on inside here? One can't even enjoy some fresh air without something happens! And what's that piece of paper for?", asked Dori.
His words woke up the confused dwarves and now they were all staring at him mumbling some unintelligible words.

06 - Bombur (02)

"What ever has gotten into him?", Bombur thought to himself. This was the first time Gandalf had been so adamant about something. The same old man who always used to act so carefree. Hurrying to devour the last of poor Bilbo's bacon and eggs, Bombur glanced over at Thorin's table.
"Whatever you decide on, I will go along with it", he declared. "But in the burglar's defence, he seems to be a mighty fine cook, if I may say so myself."
Gathering his belongings, and donning his pale green hood, Bombur stepped out onto Bilbo's porch and enjoyed the warm morning sun. It had been dark when they arrived the night prior, and now Bombur took in the beautiful surroundings for the first time.
"Not a bad place to live, eh?" he said to Dori.

05 - Gandalf (02)

The room went silent as the shards from the jug of water settled on the wooden floor. Gandalf had acted in rage over the dwarves' stubborness, and now he would have to remake the jug or buy a new one. This morning was going to be more than testing to his already sour mood. After a long silence Dwalin decided to voice his opinions. "I just think you should have been more clear on this burglar. We are going to risk his life after all."

After several of the younger dwarves had left the room he had thought that this discussion had died out, and that he would not need to discuss it any further. He looked over at the other side of the table where Thorin, Balin and Dwalin sat among others, and he could see that they would be even harder to convince than the last bunch.

He let out a long sigh and looked around the room. On a small cupboard in the corner there stood a pen and an inkwell. He rose to his feet and picked up the writing material which he then placed on the table in front of the remaining dwarves. "You know where I stand in this matter, and even though I am older than any history you know you still seem to doubt me. It is your mission after all so you get to decide. Go ahead and write a letter to Bilbo and leave me out off your stupidity!"

With that he turned away from the dwarves and marshed out the front door where he nearly tripped over Dori. "Get out of my way you dwarven fool!" He found himself a nice sunny slope on Bilbo's hill and sat down for a few smoke rings.

04 - Dori (01)

Dori left the table, but he didn't care about helping the other dwarves. He just wanted to walk out of the door and see the landscape: it was so different from the landscape he was used to. Here, there were multi-coloured flowers, beautiful majestic trees and vast cultivated fields shining under the sun and rippling under the gentle springy breeze. When he was young, the other dwarves used to banter him because he had always loved colours and flowers. And the colours of the Shire where so vivid that they made him almost feel dizzy. They could almost hypnotise him. He was a strong and valiant dwarf, but he had also a deep aesthetic sense that made him enjoy small pleasures of life that the other dwarves didn't understand or didn't feel attracted to.

Purple, yellow, red and blue
Every colour here is true
Shining like the craved gems
That the dragon still defends...

He just started to sing this song all alone outside Bilbo's door, when a noise from the inside interrupted him.

03 - Fili(01)

The mood around the table quickly dropped. However it didn't take long before the dwarves were talking again. Fili and Kili were discussing the size of the dragon and its hoard when Oin joined the discussion. "It doesn't really matter if we don't get going soon."
This finished up the conversation and made Fili and Kili more eager to get going. And they quickly ate the remainder of their fried eggs.
"Let's tidy up a bit, Kili before we join the others in the larder." said Fili. "I'm way ahead of you brother." responded Kili who had already started piling up empty plates and crocks. It quickly turned into a competition of who could carry the most. And it didn't take long before all the empty plates and crocks were piled up in the kitchen.
They stuck their heads into the dining room "We're off to the larder, to help out." They got a few nods and grunts in response.

02 - Gandalf (01)

Gandalf was not at all pleased with how last night's discussions had played out. It was essential to bring Bilbo on this journey, for reasons far more important than these dwarves could even hope to comprehend. He was sitting at the table eating his second serving of scrambled eggs when he heard Nori protesting in the far corner.
"I say we shouldn't even have come this way to begin with. We are way off course for the mountain, and this hobbit seems more like baggage than burglar. Why don't we just leave right away and be done with it?" Most of the other dwarves nodded in agreement, and Gandalf realized he would once again have to interfere.
"I will have none of that talk anymore! I brought all of you to the Shire for a reason, and that reason is mr Baggins. What all of you fail to understand is that without my aid you would still be stuck in the bloody mountains digging coal for the humans furnaces. If I say we need Bilbo that is because we need him. Now I would suggest that you", and with that he pointed at Nori, Ori and Gloin, "get yourselves out into the larder and try to locate whatever goods we could use for our journey." After a few grumpy looks the dwarves shuffled off towards the pantry and larder. Gandalf had to get this lot on the road as soon as possible so he could hope to get some peace from these dwarves.

01 - Bombur (01)

It was still early in the morning when Bombur entered the dining hall of their peculiar little host. Looking around him, his fellow dwarven travellers had already begun munching down their breakfast.
"Why didn't any of you wake me up?" he asked them grumpily. There was nothing Bombur loathed more than missing out on a meal.
"Oh, we figured you treasured your sleep, dear friend." said Kili, one of the youngsters.
"Do hurry up though, Thorin wants us to leave sharply."
Scanning the room in its entirety, Bombur noticed that their newest companion, the little burglar, had not joined the others for breakfast. Apparently Bilbo was still fast asleep, so with a determined look in his eyes, Bombur headed for the kitchen and started to assemble what could possibly be his last proper breakfast for a very long time.
